Kenai Peninsula Borough School District accomplishments for the 2016-17 school year were highlighted by Superintendent Sean Dusek and Board President Joe Arness Tuesday at the Kenai Peninsula Borough Assembly meeting as part of the Assembly’s monthly meeting.

Over 600 students graduated from the school district with many earning scholarships to attend post-secondary education. Dusek also acknowledged some of the district’s state champions, Josh Jackman from Kenai Central High School and Brenner Furlong from Soldotna High School, in track and field; as well as both Kenai soccer teams qualifying to state tournament play.

Results were recently returned on the JumpStart Program, where high school students take college level classes and earn credits through KPC.

Dusek: “We had over 120 students second semester participate in the JumpStart Program and we typically have anywhere between 150 to 200 in the fall and a little bit less in the spring. Probably well over 500 credits were earned by our students.”

Dusek also highlighted a couple of recent innovations.  Project Search, a new program for intensive needs students, recently had its graduation.

Dusek: “They work with the hospital, it’s a great partnership you probably heard that from CPGH, and those students get jobs in the community here and I wanted to thank our business partners with that because these kids are very productive and they give back to the community. They work really hard and their great employees. This is a phenomenal program and I encourage you to remain informed  on that program.”

Superintendent Dusek spotlighted the Upstream Academy, which assists students in science, technology, engineering and math programs.

Dusek: “We’ve developed a strong partnership with our tribal entities around the district over the last several years. It’s kind of along the lines with Ansep that occurs up in Anchorage through U.A. system, and we’re really developing our partnerships with post-secondary opportunities

Superintendent Dusek also touched on efficiency within the district citing professional development delivered via electronics or online, reorganizing warehouse services, student nutrition, pools, and improved efficiency in district administration.
