KPBSD Efforting Toward Opening Facilities For Summer Usage

Author: Coach Dan Gensel |

The Kenai Peninsula Borough School District, in an attempt to determine the safest, most effective and responsible means of opening school buildings and school (district) facilities under the current state directives and mandates, CDC recommendations, ASAA policies, and social distancing standards, continues working with multiple state, federal, and local organizations and agencies toward an eventual opening of KPBSD facilities.

Peninsula Sports offers a four-part series on the efforts of the KPBSD and the directives established through cooperation with numerous contributors.

Part One: District Working Toward Re-opening Under CDC Guidelines

KPBSD Assistant Superintendent Dave Jones is heading the KPBSD’s efforts to safely re-open school facilities for public and school use for the summer of 2020 and in preparation of the 2020 school year.

The district will follow CDC guidelines and state recommendations in determining the proper ways and means for re-opening.

Assistant Superintendent Dave Jones…

“KPBSD is in the process of trying to re-open our facilities for use, but we’ve got to look at it within all of the requirements and guidelines that are put on us at this point in time.  What we are looking at right are are the Center for Disease Control & Prevention have issued some considerations for youth sports with guiding principles; basically those guiding principles talk about the risk of COVID-19 spread.”

“The lowest risk is if you’re just performing skill building drills or conditioning either home alone or with a family members, that’s the lowest.  Next step up is increased if you have a team-based practice.  More risk is with team competition.  Even more is team competition between teams from the same local geographic area and then what they have is the highest risk, full competition from teams from different geographic areas. So we’re looking at that saying ok that’s where we’re at; we’re also looking at the Re-open Alaska Responsibly Phase Three & Four guidance from the state,  There’s both individual guidance that they give in there and there’s guidance that they give to businesses and activities to take care of that we need to look at.”

User Groups will be required to submit a mitigation plan to the district.

Assistant Superintendent Dave Jones…

“So we’ve be looking at all of those requirements and how we can open our buildings back up and part of that plan is when we have people that want ot use them, there going to need to be able to provide to us a mitigation plan to say ok here’s how we’re going to reduce the risk of the COVID-19 spread through our practices.”
