KPBSD Recognizes Winners Of The STEM Design Challenge

The Kenai Peninsula Borough School District is recognizing the nearly 30 entries districtwide for their participation in the KPBSD ‘STEM Design Challenge 2021-22’. The challenge is for students who are challenged to brainstorm, develop, and implement a solution to an engineering problem using various building materials.

 

KPBSD Superintendent Clayton Holland told KSRM:

“Today we celebrate 30 KPBSD teams who participate in our districtwide STEM Design Challenge, which took the place of our regular Mind A-Mazes challenge that we normally do. students around the peninsula took an opportunity to work collaboratively on a STEM competition. This year, it was a Toothpick Bridge Challenge. Thank you to all the volunteers, coaches, parents, and teams. Congratulations to our elementary age first place teams who tied from Nikiski North Star Elementary and Mountain View Elementary Schools. Also, congratulations to the middle/high School teams from Nikiski Middle and Kenai Middle School who also tied for first place.”

 

 

The teams that won the competition achieved the maximum score for their Toothpick Bridge Challenge, with both of their bridges holding over 5 gallons of water (over 40 lbs.) with no structural failures, which, according to Nikiski North Star Elementary, will receive school plaques from the District for their 1st place STEM performance.
