The Kenai Peninsula Borough School District began rolling out surveys on Tuesday to each family with a child attending a district school. The e-mailed survey gives families the opportunity to discuss internet speed, wireless capability, and devices available in the house, to determine how capable each family is for distance learning.
In addition, there is an opportunity for families to tell each respective school additional information they may need to know, offering a blank slate for parents to offer-up concerns with the entire process of the district’s extended closure.
An e-mail sent to parents of Mountain View Elementary students from principal Karl Kircher says, “Your child’s classroom teacher or another Mountain View staff member will be contacting you with more information regarding the school closure.” The questions asked in the actual survey are:
- Student ID number (if you known it);
- Student’s first and last name;
- What grade is the student enrolled in;
- Which school is the student enrolled in;
- Which of the following devices are available for students to use in the home (computers, tablets, etc);
- Does your student have access to a device that includes a standard web browser;
- Do you feel your devices are likely to meet current needs for studying and learning in the home;
- What type of internet connection is available in your home;
- Do you have the ability to connect devices wirelessly to your home network;
- Is there anything else that you want us to know or that we can do to help you?
Automated calls went out to parents on Tuesday. On Monday, Pegge Erkeneff of the Kenai Peninsula Borough School District addressed the survey strategy: “Everybody can expect a call in the next several days from the school district to assess what their needs are. What they need, what kind of ability they have to get information and content online, how are they for meals, so we’re going to be checking in with every one of our families over the next couple of days.”
The plans to make these calls were announced shortly after the district announced their food delivery plan on Sunday, as reported by KSRM.
