Due to recent remarks by U.S. Congressman Don Young, suicides in schools is a hot topic.
The Kenai Peninsula Borough School District has conducted suicide training for many years but will be training a more streamlined course in November.
Superintendent Dr. Steve Atwater said thankfully they do not encounter the problem in this district too often.
Atwater: “It’s always an underlying concern I don’t know if it’s a big concern, but it’s certainly on that we constantly pay attention to and are aware of, each of our employees is trained to have that awareness for when a student is beginning to show potential signs of suicide, that’s a training that takes place for two hours each August, so yes we do have a keen awareness of it and fortunately for us we rarely encounter it.”
The new training to be implemented in November was described as more user-friendly.
