Kenai Peninsula Borough School District Superintendent John O’Brien announced his intent to retire at the end of the 2020-2021 school year.

First announced in the agenda of the May 6 school board meeting, Superintendent O’Brien made it known to the board that he intends to retire in June.

The board met earlier today in a work session to discuss and begin the 2021-2022 superintendent search process. The board has formed a four-person committee to facilitate the superintendent search process. They will be in charge of recruiting, developing, and recommending candidates to the board for approval. The finalists will be chosen by the school board.

Superintendent O’Brien has been an educator since 1993. He began his career as a special education teacher in Maine. He also served as an athletic director, assistant principal, and principal. In 2005, he and his family moved to Nikiski, where he joined the Kenai Peninsula Borough School District as principal of Nikiski Middle-High School. He has served as district superintendent since July of last year.
