The Kenai River Special Management Area Board will meet tonight, September 11; one item on their agenda is to consider supporting Joint Resolution No. 1.
So far, the Kenai Peninsula Borough Assembly, Seward City Council, Kenai City Council, and Soldotna City Council have considered the joint resolution which will request the 2017 Board of Fisheries Upper Cook Inlet Finfish Meeting to be held on the Kenai Peninsula.
KRSMA Board Member Andrew Carmichael commented the last Board of Fisheries meeting held here in 1995.
Carmichael: “It was an awesome deal because it gave so many fishermen from on the Peninsula an opportunity to comment firsthand, families were able to attend instead of maybe one person per family, with so much fishing and commercial fishing and sport fishing and personal use and subsistence happening on the peninsula it seems reasonable that the meeting could happen on the peninsula.”
We asked him what supposedly happened so that the board didn’t want to come back.
Carmichael: “I don’t remember a single, for lack of a better word, law enforcement interaction. People came together and even though they disagreed vehemently at times it was still respectable and very well done.”
