Candidates for the Kenai Peninsula Borough Assembly’s District 9 seat will appear on KSRM’s first Candidate Forum tonight.
Dawson Slaughter, 24-years-old of Anchor Point, said he is looking to get the Peninsula’s youth more interested in what is happening in local government.
Slaughter: “I’m just tired of the way things are going as it is, I think we need to have some young blood in the office. I was approached by a few of my friends that I’ve made over the years, Fred Sturman was one of them, he thinks and I believe in it, that it’s a good idea to have some young blood on the board. We need to remember that we control the government, not the government controls us.”
Dawson is in favor of lower taxes and has the support of Alaskans for Grocery Tax Relief Now, the group behind Ballot Proposition 1 on the borough ballot.
His opponent Willy Dunne says finding a balance between taxes and government services is one of his top priorities.
Dunne: “Roads are always an issue. Our Kachemak Emergency Services and Anchor Point Emergency Services are also growing, they’re finding more and more need for fire and emergency services in our district. So I would like to see our emergency service areas fully funded. I’m sure we’ll need to find a balance between sales tax and property tax, perhaps look at properties that are exempted from property tax and see if there might be appropriate modifications to the property tax system.”
Both will appear via phone at 5:00 pm tonight for KSRM’s first Candidate Forum.
The schedule is as follows:
