Lancer Smith Wrestling Tournament Spotlights Alaska’s Best

The Lancer Smith Memorial Wrestling Tournament, consisting of divisions for all high school wrestling classifications, middle school wrestling and K-5 wrestlers, concentrates Alaska’s entire wrestling community into a three-day competition held at the Menard Arena in Wasilla and hosted by Palmer High School.

 

Lancer Smith High School Division

The high school competition was seeded by weight-class and wrestled without regard to school classification.

Division I Colony outpointed the field with 255.5 points for first place in the team scoring. The remaining top five positions were all filled by Division I schools: Lathrop (198.5), South (197.5), Soldotna (194.5 ) and Palmer (124).  Nikiski (38), Kenai (33), Homer (13.5) and Seward (5) also competed.

Individual Performances: SoHi

The Soldotna Stars earned four individual championships, three in the boys competition and one in the girls division.  Trinity Donovan topped the 145-pound division in the girls bracket.  SoHi’s Jacob Strausbaugh won at 103 pounds; Wayne Mellon won the 171 weight-class and Liam Babbit remained undefeated at 215 pounds.

Other top-three finishes for the Stars in the boys competition included: Ezekiel Miller, third at 125; Trevor Michael, third at 135; Isaac Chavarria, third at 145 and Hunter Richardson, second at 189,

For the SoHi girls:  Jessica Leclair placed fourth at 103; Angelina Chavarria, fifth at 112; Daisy Hannevold, fifth at 135 and Erin Bell, fifth at 145.

Individual Performances: Kenai and Nikiski

For the Kardinals, Talon Whicker placed sixth in the 125-pound class. Leading the Bulldogs, Truit McCaughey, fifth at 171 and Mayaac Schmit, sixth at 285.
