With time running down in the fourth quarter and trailing 22-20 to the Homer Mariners, the Nikiski Bulldogs mounted a final touchdown drive for a Peninsula Conference victory 26-22 over the Mariners.
Nikiski forced an Anthony Kalugin fumble with under two minutes remaining in the game and in the Bulldogs playoff hopes. The winner of the Homer-Nikiski game in-line for the second playoff position to the Division III playoffs.
Nikiski’s Sam Berry, with :13 seconds remaining, scored on a 13-yard touchdown run to give the Bulldogs the victory. Berry scored on a 14-yard run midway through the fourth quarter to draw the Bulldogs to within two points at 22-20. Nikiski and Homer battled to a 14-14 halftime tie.
For the contest Sam Berry amassed 217 rushing yards and scored all four Nikiski touchdowns.
The Bulldogs improve to 2-1 in the Peninsula Conference and stand in second place with a final conference game scheduled for week eight at Nikiski against Seward on Friday, October 4th. A win against the Seahawks will secure a playoff spot for the Bulldogs. Houston holds one playoff spot with a 4-0 conference record.
