The Lathrop Malemutes, behind a strong first quarter, held-off the Soldotna Stars for the ASAA First National Bowl Division II State Football Championship on Saturday at Service High School in Anchorage.
Lathrop 39 – SoHi 28
The Malemutes scored on their first four possessions of the first half and lead SoHi 27-12 at the half.
Following an opening Lathrop touchdown, SoHi answered with a Gehret Medcoff 48-yard touchdown run to trail 7-6. The Stars next four possessions yielded only one touchdown, 1-yard run by Wayne Mellon, one interception and the Stars were twice held on downs.
In the fourth quarter, SoHi closed to within a touchdown at 27-20. However, Lathrop scored a pair of touchdowns and recovered a fumble to extend the lead to 39-20. SoHi managed a final touchdown by Brayden Taylor before the Malemutes ran-out the clock for the 39-20 victory and the 2021 Division II football championship.
Lathrop earns its first football championship.
The Soldotna Stars won the first Division II football championship in 2012 and SoHi’s name is the only name on the traveling trophy having won eight-straight.
