The incoming speaker of the Alaska House is known as a level-headed moderate willing to work across party lines. But he faces major tests in leading a new majority coalition and trying to secure agreement on a plan to address the state’s multibillion-dollar deficit.

 

Democratic Rep. Bryce Edgmon of Dillingham acknowledges moments of trepidation about his new role. But he says he’s someone who rises to the challenge.

 

Edgmon ascends to House speaker 10 years into his political career. It started with Edgmon winning a primary contest with a coin toss against his former boss. Edgmon is a strong advocate for rural Alaska issues.
