The Legislature’s decision to meet for special session in Anchorage may not be covered legally without an agreement from Governor Bill Walker.
That’s according to the lawmaker’s top attorney Doug Gardner who produced a legal memo on the issue following a request from Juneau Democrat Sen. Dennis Egan.
Last month Governor Walker proclaimed a special session for Juneau and yesterday (May 18) legislative leaders announced plans to hold their floor sessions in Anchorage beginning Thursday.
Legislators cited Anchorage being an easier, more central location to meet as the Capitol in Juneau is being renovated.
Walker says he won’t require lawmakers to return to Juneau; his priority is getting a fully funded budget passed, regardless of where that takes place.
