Lawton Field to Be Replanted

A newly created flower field in Kenai will be back this year…

Mayor Porter: “Field’s due to be planted here pretty quickly. There’s a gazebo that’s going to be put together pretty much by volunteers, which will drive the cost way down, and most of the materials are all paid for as well. That should be done by the end of the summer. There’ll be some paths put in there, and also a fence. Not like you and I would think of a fence, but just a fence to keep people from driving on it.”

Mayor Pat Porter said the Lawton Dr “field of dreams” will be entirely replanted after a teenage driver destroyed the field last year.

The new fence will be made of logs and fishermen’s rope, giving the field a rustic appearance.

Porter said the field should regrow year after year with roughly a 30% loss each season. New flowers will be sown each spring, but she’s asking visitors to tread carefully…

Mayor Porter: “We’re going to put paths in there. We need to try and protect it, have respect of the field, we want it to remain beautiful. We want people to be able to continue to use it and so the Beautification Committee has been very careful with the Parks and Rec Department to plan so that doesn’t go away.”

You can also help by not picking the flowers.
