Leadership Tussle Continues Over Legislative Confirmations

The Governor and Legislature continue to wrestle for control of the state as each insists on making the schedule for confirming appointments to boards and commissions.

The joint confirmation session had been planned for this morning, but was cancelled by House and Senate leadership earlier this week. On Wednesday the Governor issued and executive proclamation, ordered lawmakers to hold the session today (Friday).

However, House Speaker Mike Chenault says the House intended to take up the confirmation Sunday and issued an invitation to the Senate to join them. The Senate voted 14-5 yesterday to hold the confirmation hearing on Sunday.

Walker says he was concerned by the cancellation, particularly in light of a legal memo requested by the Senate President’s office last February, which asked about the consequences of not taking up the appointments.

Walker denied rumors that he wants to hold the confirmation hearings today since the last day he can veto Chenault’s HB 132 is tomorrow.
