A joint House and Senate Judiciary meeting discussed marijuana legislation yesterday.
The basis for the meeting was Senate Bill 30 which discussed the repeal of a section of the voter initiative permitting certain marijuana possession, and replaced it with language that provides a defense in court if one is prosecuted for possession.
Discussion during the meeting also addressed the inconsistencies of the initiative’s language which specifies one ounce of marijuana and the Supreme Court case Ravin vs. Alaska, the ruling of which specified allowing the possession of less than four ounces.
Senate District O’s Peter Micciche was in the meeting and also discussed what further needs to be addressed.
Sen. Micciche(R-Soldotna): “I understand what you’re all saying about the conflict and it is relatively easily solvable as we move on in this process. The reality of this is in Ravin versus State, the weed fairy had to magically deliver this up to four ounces in your home, we’re also regulating transportation and other things.”
Marijuana legislation has been deemed one of the top watch priorities for this session.
Alaska lawmakers will hear from the Walker administration today on marijuana regulations.
