Legislators Look to Meet in Anchorage, Possibly After Recess

Alaska’s legislators briefly gaveled into their special session this morning, but are now investigating possibly reconvening in Anchorage or taking a recess.

Governor Bill Walker called the special session late last night after lawmakers compromised for an operating budget, however that did not garner the necessary support in the House to authorize a draw from savings to cover costs for the coming year.

Now the House and Senate is questioning whether reconvening in Anchorage might work best as most legislative offices are packed up, many staff are gone, and renovation work is scheduled for the Capitol.

A two-week break has also been proposed according to House Speaker Mike Chenault who said he spoke with Walker but if that’s not agreeable, he said legislators would probably continue working.

As of now, the House Finance Committee is scheduled to meet at 10:30 am tomorrow, followed by the Senate Finance Committee at 1:30 pm.
