Legislature Considers Two Sex Education Bills

The legislature is considering a couple of bills regarding sex education in public schools and the options parents have for their children.

 

Last week the Senate passed legislation barring Alaskan schools from accepting sex education instruction from abortion providers such as Planned Parenthood. Now Senators are considering a bill that would impose penalties for anyone who might violate that ban.

 

Senate Bill 191 would let the State Medical Board revoke physicians’ licenses if they violate the ban and educators could also potentially lose their certifications or tenure for such an infraction.

 

SB 191 puts the violation on par with professional incompetence, immorality, and malpractice.

 

Wasilla Senator Mike Dunleavy, who sponsored both of the sex education bills, did not directly identify Planned Parenthood as the target in the legislation. He does accuse Planned Parenthood of indoctrinating students.

 

A hearing on SB 191 is scheduled for Tuesday afternoon in the Senate Education Committee, which Dunleavy chairs.
