Legislature Set on Anchorage for Budget Work

In an ongoing power scuffle, the Alaskan Legislature has confirmed they’ll complete their work this special session in Anchorage, not Juneau.

The Governor has made repeated calls for lawmakers to return to the capital, but Legislators have scheduled floor sessions in Anchorage for Thursday. They say Juneau is more difficult to reach and unsuitable at this time since the Capitol building is undergoing renovation work.

The Juneau delegation sided with the Governor, saying they could find alternate meeting rooms if the Capitol is unsuitable.

The full Legislature hasn’t reconvened since the first days of the special session. Instead, budget committees have been continuing the work while a handful of lawmakers gaveled in and out of technical sessions which don’t require full attendance. With no bill yet on the table, lawmakers have had nothing to vote on.
