Easter Sunday will conclude the 90 day 28th Alaska State Legislative session though Legislative leaders were certainly hoping to to adjourn before Easter but House Rules Committee Chair Greg Johnson is still skeptical.
He spoke about it Sunday evening when asked about extending the session so the initiatives that are currently scheduled for the August Primary Election would be pushed back to November’s General Election.
Johnson: “When I look at the amount of work we have in front of us, now we can do it I’ve seen things fast but we’ve got gas line we’ve got budgets we’ve got all kinds of stuff that realistically and if I we’re a gambling man I would bet a quarter we’re not going to be out of here and boy I’m gonna get killed for this one. I can’t see how we can get out of here in time, I don’t think 21 is an issue I think if you asked honestly to the people sitting at this table they would tell you the chances of us getting out of here on Sunday by midnight is pretty minuscule so I don’t think 21 is an issue I don’t think its part of the issue if it was why would I even do this? We could just push it off and stay until 12:01 and we would be done with it.”
However, the Legislature and the Governor both have the ability to call itself into a special session or legislative leaders could choose to ignore the law limiting sessions to 90 days and abide by the 121 day limit put in place by the Alaska Constitution.
