The Kenai Police Department saw a spike in domestic violence arrests in 2012.
Chief Gus Sandahl said that 2013 was comparable to 2011’s 56 arrests.
Sandahl: “2012 there were 81, so that shot up significantly. and then 2013 went down to 51.”
Sandahl said there was no apparent reason for the spike.
The Lee Shore Center’s Executive Director Cheri Smith said that much of the time not every incident is reported.
Smith: “I’ve been doing this for 20 years, its really hard to say well during this month is spikes a little bit or this year numbers went down because what we see is consistent. And some people don’t report.”
Smith added that the Center did see a correlation with KPD’s spike in numbers during 2012.
