Kenai Library Commission Sunsetted

The Kenai Library Commission was sunsetted last night after dwindling responsibilities and attendance left the group unable to form a quorum.

Mayor Pat Porter said the ordinance was spurred by a recommendation from the remaining members of the commission after a resignation was received.

Mayor Porter: “In the past we’ve always relied heavily also for advice from the Friends of the Library, they’ve been an excellent resource as well as our commissioners. So I don’t think there’s going to be much of a lag in any sort of representation to the council at all.”

Councilor Ryan Marquis questioned if the Library Commission has fully exhausted all avenues for recruiting members. He reasoned that out of a community of 7,000, there are likely 7 people who will take on the responsibility.

Currently there are only three applicants for the Commission.

The Commission was sunsetted on a vote of 4-3 with Marquis, Molloy, and Bookey opposed.
