Registration permit hunt RG248 for mountain goats in Game Management Unit 6D will open on October 1. The hunt area includes the mainland drainages of Sheep Creek; north of Port Valdez, Robe Lake, and the Richardson Highway; and east of Shoup Glacier.
Permits will be available in person at the Alaska Wildlife Trooper Office in Valdez starting at 8 a.m. Monday, Sep. 23. The first 25 eligible people will be issued permits.
Completion of the Alaska Department of Fish and Game online goat quiz is required prior to receiving a permit. The quiz is available through the ADF&G website. Hunters must have their hunting license with them to be issued a permit.
The quiz requirement was instituted in 2023 to encourage hunters to select male goats for harvest.
According to the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, selectively targeting males for harvest is important for sustainably managing goat populations. Mountain goats have low reproductive rates and often do not reproduce every year. Reducing female harvest helps to maintain the reproductive potential of the population and will provide more harvest opportunities in the future.
Last year’s survey of the area found a minimum count of 207 goats.
The maximum allowable harvest will be eight “goat points.” Total goat points are calculated using one point for each billy harvested and two points for each nanny.
