A driver passing through Kenai noticed a strange plume of smoke coming from the hood of his vehicle last night. Kenai Fire Battalion Chief Tony Prior said crews were called to the scene a little after 6pm…

Prior: “They had an older model Lincoln Continental was driving down the road, experienced some smoke, was running rough, so he pulled over into the Challenger Center parking lot, set it off to take a look and see what was happening with it, started smoking and the engine compartment caught on fire.”

Prior said the driver took the right steps to prevent a more serious incident…

Prior: “The owner of the vehicle had a canoe on the top, so they had to remove the canoe from the top of the vehicle to get access into the engine compartment, got it open and put out the fire in the engine compartment before it spread to the occupant or the passenger area. He did probably exactly what he should, he pulled over into a good open parking lot area to take a look at it and as soon as he noticed there was something wrong, he called 911. Worked out great for us.”

The Lincoln’s motor was completely destroyed during the incident. Prior said he couldn’t determine the cause of the fire.
