The herd of Caribou that has been meandering around Bridge Access is said to be growing according to Area Wildlife Biologist Jeff Selinger.

Selinger: “The lowland caribou herd is the one that people see a lot around here, that’s the one that kind of moves through town between Kenai and Soldotna and moves out behind Sterling in the winter or over towards Brown’s Lake so that’s the most visible herd we have and that seems to be increasing just a little bit but staying at about 120 to 130 animals or so.”

 

He also spoke with us about their migration patterns.

Selinger: “Several weeks ago they moved to the calving grounds, all the caribou calves should be on the ground by now, and they’ll get up and they’ll generally make a move from south of KSRM’s radio station and then moving back out onto those flats by Bridge Access Road and then slowly making their way as fall approaches up towards Marathon Road, back behind the Kenai Airport and then making their way kind of easterly after that.”
