Local Food Bank Sees Increase in Need

Kenai Peninsula Food Bank has recently noted a 13% increase of households in need of food.

 

Due to oil and gas industry layoffs, many households are facing great financial distress. With this, many are using community tools and resources which causes he food bank to face concern for the future. Linda Swarner, food bank Executive Director, explains this…

Swarner: “Well we’ve applied for some grants for purchasing of items to supplement our budget. But a lot of it relies on funding from the events like our annual Soup, Supper and Auction and donations from generous donors here on the peninsula and throughout the state.”

 

As the food bank continues to help those in need, they are in need of donations from the community.

Swarner: “Right now they can harvest their plant or grow for the hungry or they can drop by and give us cash. We take credit card or they can donate via our website or Facebook page.”

 

Swarner stated there were 800 households asking for help last month.
