The proposed Alaska LNG Project has continued the local field work around Nikiski while permitting works continue as well hopefully resulting in a draft resource report very soon.
Steve Butt with the project said there has been ongoing soil and compression sampling around Nikiski along with continued mapping of parts of the Cook Inlet.
That work is in order to determine the best site for the onshore facility and help with the crossing of the Cook Inlet, one of most intensive portions of the project.
Butt: “It’s really challenging because the tide and current and what they call med-ocean conditions of the inlet are challenging. How much work we do in the inlet is something we’re going to be very thoughtful about, plus there is endangered species, beluga whales, in the inlet. You really want to make sure that you don’t in anyway impact them. How you move the pipe across the inlet and how you impact the land on either side is the question.”
He said that work is all leading towards a draft resource report.
Butt: “We’re trying, it’s a very daunting task, it’s an enormous amount of work but we’re trying very hard to get it done in the winter to allow the FERC to review it before the next spring season. We’ll get close and we’ve been working really hard with FERC, FERC has been excellent to work with. The drafts are largely complete and we’re working really hard with all the covertures, the state representatives and the regulatory agencies as well.”
