Local Racers Fare Well On Mount Marathon

The 89th running of the Mount Marathon race in Seward on the Fourth of July was highlighted by performances by Alaskans and racers from the Kenai Peninsula.

 

The course record in the Men’s Division was broken by 25-year-old David Norris, an elite nordic skier and graduate of  Lathrop High School in Fairbank’s.  Norris set the latest mark at 41:26 lowering the men’s record by :22 seconds. and winning the men’s division by a margin of :40 seconds.

The Women’s champion for 2016, also from Alaska, 35-year-old Christy Marvin of Palmer posting a time of 51:02, the fifth fastest time in the history of the Women’s Division.

3. Denali Foldager-Strabel, Seward 53:40; 7. Aubrey Smith, Seward 56:29 8. Rachel Dow, Seward 58:07 9. Taylor Ostrander, Soldotna 59:06

In the Junior Girls Division, Molly Gellert, 2015 4A Alaska state cross country running champion from West Anchorage, won the Junior Girls Division with the second-fastest time ever recorded in that division;  Kenai  Central junior Riana Boonstra posted a 33:11 good for second place in 2016 and the third-fastest time ever in the Junior Girls Division.  Allie Ostrander holds the course record of 28:54 run in 2014 .

In the Junior Boys Division, Luke Jager of Anchorage posted a 27:29 for the top boys time.
