Local Students Partaking in Annual “Salmon in the Classroom” Event

Over 730 students from the Kenai Peninsula Borough School District will partake next week for the first day of the annual Alaska Department of Fish and Game’s “Salmon in the Classroom” .

 

The elementary students will travel to Bear Creek and Anchor Point next week for coho salmon egg-takes.

 

Students will arrive hourly at each location to participate in the egg takes and to learn about salmon life cycles, egg fertilization, external anatomy, salmon identification, and habitat requirements.

 

Each school will take around 300 eggs back to classrooms where students will get to observe those develop into fry and will be released next spring into locally designated bodies of water.

 

The egg-takes will be at Bear Creek near Seward on Tuesday, October 6, and at the Anchor River in Anchor Point on Wednesday, October 7.

 

Presentations by the Alaska Department of Fish and Game will be conducted hourly and are scheduled for 9:15 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. at Bear Creek, while Anchor River presentations are scheduled for 10:00 a.m. – 2:40 p.m.
