Five individual champions from central peninsula schools were crowned at the 2018 Region III Swimming and Diving Championships competed in the Homer Pool at Homer High School. Two area teams finished as runner-up in the team scoring for the Region III meet.
The Kodiak Bears boys team recorded its 10th- straight team championship and the Palmer girls earn their first team title in nearly 30 years.
The Soldotna girls finished second in the girls team scoring. The Kenai boys and SoHi boys finished second and third in the boys team scoring.
Individual event winners from the central peninsula included:
Kenai’s Savaii Heaven, 1st in the 100 backstroke and 1st in the 100 freestyle. Savaii Heaven was selected as the Northern Lights Conference Male Athlete of the Year.
Kenai’s Koda Poulin, 1st in the 500 freestyle.
SoHi’s Kylin Welch, 1st in the 1M Diving.
SoHi’s Madison Snyder, 1st in the 500 freestyle.
Runner-up finishes included:
SoHi’s Sam Skolnik, 2nd in the 1M Diving.
SoHi’s Ethan Evans, 2nd in the 50 freestyle and 100 butterfly.
SoHi’s Sydney Juliussen, 2nd in the 50 freestyle.
SoHi’s Darby McMillian, 2nd in the 100 backstroke.
Kenai’s Rachael Pitsch, 2nd in the 500 freestyle.
Kenai boys finished second in the 200 medley relay, 200 freestyle relay and 400 freestyle relay.
Criteria for State Swimming & Diving
Region competition determines state swimming and diving qualifiers. State qualifiers will be determined and released by ASAA Monday and will be posted at asaa.org.
Qualifying Standards for ASAA State Swimming & Diving Championships
Individual Swimming Events: The first place finisher from each
conference qualifying meet is automatically qualified. each Conference’s
next top seven (7) swimmers will be considered for qualifications for the
next twelve best statewide times gaining qualification to the State Meet.
Relay Events: The first (1) place relay team from each conference
qualifying meet finals, plus the next four (4) fastest overall team times
statewide, for a total of eight (8) relay teams.
Diving Events: The top two (2) finishers from each conference qualifying
meet finals plus the next eight (8) best scores will qualify for a total of 16
divers.
Alternate/Substitution: In the event a qualified contestant is unable to
compete due to extenuating circumstances (illness, injury, and ineligibility),
it is the responsibility of the school of the indisposed contestant(s) to notify
ASAA, by the deadline on Wednesday Nov. 1 at 11:00 am. Once notified,
ASAA will invite the next athlete with the best qualifying time.
