Local American Legion, VFW, and AMVETS members will honor two flights arriving at the Kenai Municipal Airport on Saturday, April 30.
Former Western Division National Vice President for the American Legion Auxiliary Sue Diaz says the first flight will arrive around 1 pm. That flight is scheduled to bring home a fallen veteran which she invited local veterans to honor outside of the airport.
Diaz: “We as veterans are showing our sorrow but yet our support of one of ours coming home. And showing the family that we are there for them by just being there and doing a hand salute.”
She says anyone who has a military background or is family of military is welcome to come and give that hand salute along the road outside the airport as the family leaves.
The second flight will be arriving around 2:30 pm(possibly a little before, according to Diaz) and it is the return of members of an Honor Flight which takes veterans of different war eras to Washington D.C. to visit their respective war memorials.
Diaz says all community members are invited to welcome back the veterans on that second flight.
Diaz: “It’s just to celebrate and let them know because there are so many that never got that coming home celebration. It’s never too late to let them know that they are still appreciated and will always be appreciated.”
She says those interested in participating in the welcome celebration between 2:00 – 2:30 pm on Saturday, April 30, are invited to bring signs and flags to show their appreciation outside the airport.
