Kenai’s Parks and Recreation Commission was given a request to block an unplatted road being used in Old Town Kenai.
The Kenai Historical Society’s Joe and June Harris, along with representatives from the Art and Pottery Guilds, attended last week’s meeting to voice their concerns.
Joe: “It’s undedicated and it’s unmaintained during the winter time, so nobody can drive through it in the winter time of a regular snow year.
June: “It’s unsightly, it’s an unsightly road and gives off a lot of dust in the summer time when people drive too fast.”
Those for its closure said there is nothing in the area that cannot be accessed from the city roads and Commissioner Kenneth Peterson said in his talks with local residents he only found one woman nearby who uses the road regularly.
During the meeting, June said that the road is an eyesore and Joe said it is within the Historical Society’s mission to improve Old Town.
Joe: “The Kenai Historical Society is dedicated to making people aware of Old Town and that’s why we moved these cabins and put them there. The dust from the road in the summer time, my wife is housekeeper and she doesn’t like that.”
Commissioners stated that there does not seem to be a need for the road to be open and brainstormed non-costly ideas to block it.
No action was taken.
