Lower Kenai River Trail and Seven Lakes Trail have been reopened after they received significant rehabilitation from the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge’s Burned Area Emergency Response Trail Crew. Repair of some structures along these trails still needs to be completed, but the Refuge said in a social media post that they want their visitors to regain trail access as soon as possible.
All trails within the Skilak Wildlife Recreation Area are now open to the public. Surprise Creek Trail is the only trail that remains closed. Visitors should travel these areas with caution as many trees are still unstable and prone to falling.
Surprise Creek remains the only trail still closed as a result of last year’s Swan Lake Fire. Trail crew members are working on the hundreds of downed trees on this trail.
The goal of keeping Surprise Creek Trail closed is to minimize the risk to people, while providing access where possible. The closure will remain in effect through August 25, unless rescinded or extended earlier, for cause.
