The League of Women Voters held a forum for local state representative candidates which addressed issues but also had a light side.
Laurie Moon attended the October 30 event which featured candidates Shauna Thornton, Rep. Kurt Olson, Rocky Knudsen, Speaker Mike Chenault, Sen. Paul Seaton, Eric Treider, and Sen. Peter Micciche.
She said it was good to hear some of the candidates perspectives that she hadn’t heard before.
Moon: “I didn’t have a real firm stand on anybody really so some of this tonight really helped me make my decisions.”
Each candidate got time to address things like the proposed Alaska LNG Project, education, and fishing but there was also laughter such when unopposed Sen. Seaton asked himself questions, answered, and rebutted.
Sen. Micciche and Treider disagreed the most out of the candidates.
When asked what his top priority would be if reelected, Sen. Micciche said there’s a number of them.
Sen. Micciche(District O, R): “We have to make the tough decisions, we have to reduce spending significantly over the next three to five years, get to a sustainable level, by that time hopefully we will have our economy diversified with a stable oil price, increased production and an economy that’s somewhat booming because of the planning for the natural gas pipeline project.”
Treider said his top priority is to propose a constitutional amendment to rescind the Citizen’s United decision by the Supreme Court.
Treider: “The prevalence of big money in the political system has totally stifled political discussion between people, until we get this dealt with we don’t have any hope of trying to resurrect a people’s government.”
