A Soldotna resident called the Soldotna Public Safety Communications Center Wednesday after she had received several distressed text messages from her daughter’s phone.
The texts included GPS coordinates with “SOS” and “I need help” messages according to the trooper reports.
The complainant said she was unable to contact her daughter in any way to determine the nature of the emergency.
Search and rescue funds were expended to send a Helo 3 helicopter to provide assistance.
The daughter was located on Kalgin Island in the Cook Inlet where she had been setnetting with her boyfriend’s family.
While the helicopter was en route, the complainant was eventually able to contact her daughter, who claimed she never sent the texts and that her phone was malfunctioning.
The search and rescue helicopter was cancelled at 9:44 am.
