A crowd near Haines witnessed a man in a full bear costume harassing bears. Alaska State Troopers would like to speak with him.

On Monday a crowd had gathered on the Chilkoot River near Haines where bears were congregating near a fish weir to catch pink salmon.

Suddenly a man in a “fairly realistic” bear costume ran through the crowd and began jumping.

The man got within 10-feet of a sow and two cubs according to Alaska Fish and Game technician Lou Cenicola who moved the sow out of the way for the man’s safety.

He refused to provide Cenicola his name and it was not known why the man did this.

Technician Cenicola was able to get the man’s license plate number as he drove away, still in full costume.

Troopers spokeswoman Megan Peters says it’s not the first time they have encountered a man in a bear suit.
