Initial investigation into the multi-vehicle crash which closed the Seward Highway this afternoon indicates the tour bus headed northbound with passengers struck another northbound vehicle.
The vehicle struck was stopped while waiting for cars to turn into the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center.
That crash triggered a reaction involving five occupied vehicles in all, two of which were towing trailers.
Two patients were transported via Life Med to Anchorage for serious injuries.
Forty-two passengers were on the bus when the crash occurred.
Multiple others were transported via ambulances.
One man, 55-year-old John Zollner III of Anchorage was pronounced dead on scene.
His next of kin have been notified.
Witnesses on scene reported the bus driver commenting about the bus’ brakes not working.
The Troopers have estimated now that the highway may be closed until 10:00 or 11:00 pm.
