The Kenai City Council passed two projects for construction this summer.

The award to Foster Construction for $246,113 will include a short extension of Magic Avenue to connect to Daubenspeck Circle, and paving of those along with the Daubenspeck parking lot.

During discussion, Council Member Ryan Marquis questioned the need for it.

Marquis: “I can’t justify spending a quarter of a million dollars paving a road that I don’t think needs to be paved right now, especially when there are other areas of the city that could probably use some road work.”

Council members Marquis, Terry Bookey, Bob Molloy, and Student Representative Allie Ostrander voted no however the resolution still passed.

City Manager Rick Koch said the second resolution for the rehabilitation of about 1,800 feet of Marathon Road is due to some water damage from a rising water table.

Koch: “They’ll both be done this summer, I think that the window for Marathon Road is fairly compact and I’m not sure when that is but that’s only a couple of weeks of a project. Daubenspeck Parking Lot, that piece of Magic Avenue and then that piece of roadway on Daubenspeck Circle, I think they have until September to finish that.”

The Marathon Road project was awarded to Alaska Roadbuilders for $40,000 and Koch said it will aim to install a more flexible surface to deal with the materials underneath.
