Members of the authority on Alaska’s soon-to-be commercial marijuana industry discussed proposed rues to allow people 21 years and over to consume pot in the stores that will sell it.
Soldotna Police Chief and Marijuana Control Board Member Peter Mlynarik says that while board members voted to allow on-site consumption last year, regulations have not been set for that yet.
He also clarified that business owners and applicants have to request that endorsement on their retail license.
No final decisions were made in Thursday’s Marijuana Control Board meeting; the proposals must be formally drafted for consideration by members at a future meeting.
Board members discussed whether people would be allowed to buy marijuana and related products in one area but then be required to go to another area to consume it, or if retailers would have separate areas.
Board Chair Bruce Schulte suggested separate areas: people could buy products “to-go” in a certain area, but retailers could have an onsite consumption area with a list of approved products that must be consumed there.
Mlynarik says the board does not expect to have on-site consumption regulations finalized by February 24, when the state will begin accepting commercial marijuana license applications.
The board’s next meeting was scheduled for April 27.
