Mariners Claim Fifth Kachemak Wrestling Championship: Kenai Wins Two Individual Championships

The Homer Mariners wrestled to a fifth-straight Kachemak Conference Wrestling Champion and the Mariner girls won their second-straight wrestling team title at the 2019 Kachemak Conference Wrestling Tournament held at Redington High School.

 

The Mariner boys outscored Redington 179-176 for the team title; Nikiski finished fourth and Kenai finished fifth overall.

 

Mariner champions included: Austin Cline, 119 pounds; Russell Nyvall, 125 pounds; Mose Hayes, 152 pounds; Anthony Kalugin, 189 pounds; Alex Hicks, 285 pounds.

 

The Kenai Kardinals Tucker Vann, at 171 pounds, and Rocky Sherbahn, at 215 pounds, went undefeated to recorded Kachemak Conference individual championships.  Kenai’s Talon Whicker finished 2nd at 112 pounds and Owen Whicker finished third at 112 pounds.  Both qualify to the Division II state tournament.

 

Nikiski’s top three finishers included Ayden Fleming, second at 125 pounds; Jaryn Zoda, second at 130 pounds and Koleman McCoughey, second at 171 pounds.

 

The top three in each weight class advance to the 2019 ASAA Division II State Wrestling Championships scheduled for Friday and Saturday, December 20-21 at the Alaska Airlines Center in Anchorage
