A new program to encourage young people to invest in a career in the maritime industry is coming to Homer.
A working group including state agencies, the University of Alaska, and other training and industry groups is putting together the Alaska Maritime Workforce Development Plan.
The Plan will bring hands-on experience in the industry to coastal communities throughout Alaska.
This spring, the group has been angling for legislative support for its efforts; a resolution introduced by Kodiak Representative Louise Stutes has passed the House.
The group now moves on to fundraising and collaborating with other industry sectors to pool their knowledge, funding and other resources.
