This year’s Homer Winter Carnival Celebration, with the theme “Sunshine and Snowflakes,” will be held on Saturday, February 8. Enjoy various floats from local businesses, civic and non-profit organizations, associations, and individuals of all ages.
The celebration is presented by the Homer Chamber of Commerce, and they welcome all to participate.
This event celebrates all the winter activities Homer offers to the community.
Brad Anderson, Executive Director of the Homer Chamber of Commerce, says, “It’s a wonderful time to see Homer in a different light.”
He says the theme, “Sunshine and Snowflakes,” is inspired by the excitement of winter’s end and the arrival of springtime.
“This year we wanted to kind of see how we can mix those two thoughts together. A lot of people refer to our areas as on the banana belt for Alaska because we’re a little bit more mild in our temperatures. So, we decided to have some fun and celebrate that we’re not as cold as elsewhere, but we still have a winter here to enjoy.” Anderson says.
This event is perfect for anyone looking for something fun to do in Alaska’s winter season.
The parade will begin on Saturday, Feb. 8, at noon on Pioneer Ave; however, a float participant should arrive at 11:00 AM at the Homer High School Parking Lot. The carnival events, such as a Fish Fry, a 2k Fun Run, and more, will follow.
Participants do not have to enter a float. Entries can be walking, car, bike entries, etc., as long as they are creative.
To participate, individuals should complete the form online or download it and send it to Silas Firth at membership@homeralaska.org.
The chamber also seeks volunteers to help with traffic, assist with parade line-up, and ensure everything runs smoothly. They say volunteering is a great way to get involved and support community traditions and note that students can also use volunteer hours to help.
The Carnival takes place in Downtown Homer.
