Intra-district competitions between sports teams in the Mat-Su School District were placed on-hold Sunday when the Matanuska-Susitna Borough School District announced that all indoor sport competitions will be postponed until the end of the month as COVID-19 cases statewide and within the Mat-Su district continue to surge.
High school volleyball and high school swimming and diving, which had been granted permission by the ASAA to continue through November 21st, will stand down from competition and the district will reevaluate and will notify families by October 30th of the status of the fall programs. Practices will be allowed under High “Red” Risk protocols.
The Mat-Su School District stated that ” the pause on indoor sports is intended to slow the spread of COVID-19 so students can continue with in-person classes.” Twelve schools in the district have had confirmed cases of COVID-19 since the start of the 2020-21 school year. The Mat-Su School District announced on Sunday that five schools will be closed on Monday and Tuesday, October 19-20 due to positive covid testing, including: Wasilla High School, Colony High School, Mat-Su Tech, Mat-Su Central and Sherrod Elementary.
