“Giving Tuesday” is typically celebrated after Thanksgiving as a platform for individuals, families, and organizations to support important causes during the holiday season. This year, Giving Tuesday is being celebrated today, May 5, as a global day of giving and unity. The COVID-19 pandemic prompted moving the celebration ahead and re-naming it, “Giving Tuesday Now.”
United Way of Southeast Alaska, like many others in Southeast Alaska, has sprung into action to support over 30 partner-agencies and other community partners. They are working with their non-profit partners to directly help individuals and families affected by the economic consequences of the pandemic.
The aim of Giving Tuesday Now is to address the needs of peninsula neighbors most affected by the economic consequences of the pandemic. That includes individuals without access to sick days, service workers placed on furlough that threatens housing stability, or families left without quality childcare due to school closure.
According to United Way of Southeast Alaska, donations given on Giving Tuesday Now will assist the following, among others:
- Food distribution to students affected by school closures and other vulnerable populations who are isolated or lack access.
- Availability of shelter beds for people experiencing homelessness who do not have the resources needed to stay safe.
- Operational funding gaps for health and human service agencies.
- Loss of income and access to services for vulnerable populations.
Those interested in participating in this day of donation can do so by visiting United Way of Southeast Alaska online.
