Mayor Anderson Proposes City to Assist in Pool Funding

Last night at the Soldotna City Council Meeting, Mayor Nels Anderson asked the Council to consider jointly putting some City monies towards keeping the Skyview pool open for one year.

Mayor Anderson said that the Kenai Peninsula School District does not have the funds to keep it open this year.

Anderson: “The school superintendent has talked to me, has talked to the hospital administrator and a number of other people about trying to see if we can find a way to keep it open. One of the proposals is for us to contribute some money towards that, to help the facility operate for a year while we are trying to find a permanent solution to keeping the pool open as a community resource.”

He added that there are a number of community classes and programs that use the pool currently and without it would have no place because all local pools are very busy.

Mayor Anderson said Central Peninsula Hospital has indicated that it would also help fund the pool for a year because of patient therapies.

Anderson: “Patients need that rather than driving for 45 minutes or whatever to get to Nikiski to do their pool therapy, they’d be able to use the Skyview pool for pool therapy.”

Thus far Mayor Anderson has just asked the Council to think about it in order decide whether or not to put the idea before Soldotna residents.
