Mayor Navarre Comments On LNG Advisory Board

As we previously reported, Gov. Sean Parnell signed an administrative order Monday to create a Municipal Advisory Gas Project Review Board to the Alaska LNG Project.

Mayor Mike Navarre commented on the creation of the board.

Mayor Navarre: “We had a good meeting with the Governor where he talked about reaching consensus with municipal governments on the project going forward and if we truly are looking for consensus then it gives us a comfort level that we’ll have an opportunity to provide meaningful input. But it is an advisory board and that of course on it’s own is a concern.”

Mayor Navarre added that the board will not be involved in the confidential negotiations taking place and added a concern.

Mayor Navarre: “We would still like to see some language in the legislation that puts some constraints on existing oil and gas properties so that they don’t negotiate that as part of the agreement.”

He stated that it is a step in the right direction and hopes the board will be able to recommend important details in the negotiation process in order to protect the various borough’s tax bases and residents.
