Borough Mayor Mike Navarre said that he is drafting a letter in response to Gov. Sean Parnell’s letter stating that borough’s will not be able to individually negotiate on the Alaska LNG Project.

Mayor Navarre said that he’s heard the Senate and Governor are looking into an advisory group from the municipalities affected but that seeing the structure process is still the most important part.

Mayor Navarre: “All we were asking for was to participate in how they are going to set up a PILT. If they are changing the tax base and changing the tax structures we need to be able to calculate what our revenues might be so that we can deal with the impacts related to a major project like that both in the construction time frame and after it’s built.”

He added that communication between the State, the boroughs and what is implemented is very important and voiced concerned over what could happen if they are not included in the process.

Mayor Navarre: “The other thing that we’re concerned with is the idea about them possibly bringing back something that would  have existing oil properties included in some sort of a PILT. And they can’t do that currently under the law but it’s possible if they were to do it by bringing it back through legislation.”
