The City of Kenai has scheduled public meetings for the Kenai Water Redevelopment Assessment and Feasibility Study. The public meetings are scheduled for Monday May 2, and Tuesday, May 3. The city is working with McKinley Research Group, LLC on the study and considering redevelopment strategies for the Kenai Waterfront Area to maximize the potential of the area to support a thriving business, residential, recreational, and cultural community. The meetings will be conducted by McKinley Research Group to share the results of the public visioning session and then introduce a workshop the following day. Members of the public are encouraged to attend and participate.
The public work sessions will take place at the Kenai Chamber of Commerce and Visitor Center. The Monday session will be a Concepts Public Work Session from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. The public work session scheduled for this evening includes a project overview, visioning research summary, report of site conditions, summary of economic context and opportunities, community master planning, and concluding with a Q&A session with visions for next steps.
Then, On Tuesday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., there will be the Concepts Open Studio (also from the Chamber of Commerce and Visitor Center). At that meeting, there will be a design session with the team to refine and make ideas/master plans based on the previous discussion. Additionally, there will be 2-3 alternative master plans developed as hand drawn large scale drawings for the evening meeting.
Later that evening, from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., the Concepts Public Work Session (also from the Chamber of Commerce and Visitor Center) will present the developed priorities of programming and the 2-3 alternative master plans. The public will be given an opportunity to provide input and add ideas to the alternative plans. The meeting will conclude with discussing steps moving forward as well as defining common elements and direction on a preferred plan.
The 160-acre area includes both city-owned and privately-owned uplands and tidelands located in the area adjacent to Bridge Access Road beginning at Millennium Square, located east of the Kenai Senior Center, to the Kenai City Dock within the City of Kenai near the mouth of the Kenai River where it meets the Cook Inlet.
There will be no action taken by the Kenai City Council or the various boards and commissions of the city at the meetings.
