Ron Holman, Commander of the local American Legion tells KSRM the meaning of Memorial Day:
“It’s a full day of memorializing our war dead, remembering people we’ve never met, remembering our family members who served, remembering our family members who passed away in the line of duty. It’s very emotional for me, and I know it’s very emotional for the veterans that have served in those capacities. We encourage everybody. To come out and celebrate with us, celebrate those lives that were lost.”
According to the National Moment of Remembrance Act, passed in 2000, Americans are asked to pause whatever they are doing at 3 p.m., local time to remember those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for the freedoms of the United States of America.
Memorial Day is observed on the last Monday in the month of May.
