An extraordinarily mild winter saw reduced snowfall and increased melting, which may have helped our ailing moose population.
Area Management Biologist for the Department of Fish & Game Jeff Selinger said the Nikiski area moose have been suffering from poor nutrition…
Selinger: “That’s one of the things, when we have light snow depths is moose have a lot more area that they can cover and move to, so I think we saw a lot of moose dispersing away from the road into other areas; however, food still is limited and along the road surfaces are some of the better place for moose browse to occur on the right of ways.”
Since we haven’t seen any significant wildfires in Nikiski for several decades, which means the browse isn’t renewing itself and moose aren’t finding as much food as they need.
